MR. NELSON'S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Family Members,

As we begin this new 2017 calendar year, I would like to share some exciting and important things here at Valley Oaks:  1) Reading goals and celebrations; 2) Parent/Student safety; 3) MAP testing and growth.

First, all students in grades 2-6 have very specific reading goals for each trimester.  At the 50% mark of the trimester, and at the end of the trimester, we have a special celebration for all students who have met their “points” goal AND their “comprehension” goal.  These celebrations are super fun and the kids love them!  I cannot stress enough how important reading practice is for all of our students.  If your student has any struggles in Language Arts or Math, or is performing below grade level in any area, it is CRUCIAL that students read as much as they can - at their level.  Reading at school is NOT ENOUGH for most students.  Reading is fun when students find something they like to read, have success reading and understanding the story, and are recognized for their great reading efforts.

Second, in order to promote parent and student safety in and around the school, there are a few areas of focus for Valley Oaks parents: 1) Buses ALWAYS have the priority at schools.  Please do not drive around a bus while in the “loop”.  The green area in front of the school is for pick-up/drop-off only - for a maximum of two (2) minutes.  The staff parking lots are for staff parking only - they are not “loops” for parents to drop off their students.  2) Students who participate in BFLC Clubs, Extended Day, or ASES must remain on campus after school and report immediately to the appropriate location.  3) We welcome Parents/Guardians/Family members coming to pick up students after school.  However, we need parents to stay off of the blacktop area (especially on Wednesdays) and away from the classroom doors until the bell rings at 2:30pm.  Students are actively working - going back and forth to classrooms, doing work on the playgrounds, etc. until 2:30pm.

Lastly, we are finishing our 2nd round of MAP testing.  I am proud to say that preliminary results show that our students are making good growth in both English Language Arts (Reading) and Math.  All students have a defined growth goal for the entire year that they are trying to achieve or surpass.  Some students met their end-of-year goal in this 2nd round!  Students (and families) should know what these goals are and work together to do all you can to achieve these goals.   We have one more MAP test (Spring ) to reach the goals, so let’s keep putting in the work, practicing, and doing lots of reading!  Keep up the great work and keep a growth mindset!

REMEMBER: We put information on Facebook.  Follow us at:    https://www.facebook.com/ValleyOaksElementary/

Please take the time to keep up with communication from the school.  We regularly send home information with students. We also have a website (http://vo-gjuesd-ca.schoolloop.com/), a Facebook page  (https://www.facebook.com/ValleyOaksElementary), and a Symbaloo page for the students (http://www.symbaloo.com/mix/valleyoaksbflc2).
